Rumford Hospital
Rumford Hospital made quite a splash in the inaugural Dempsey Challenge. Captained by Becky Hall, the team recruited a staggering 72 members and raised $16,026.50!
The team used creative methods to raise the money - including a Cow Chip Casino - and plans to be back with a goal of 75 members in 2010. Below, captain Becky Hall describes the team's fundraising efforts.
Team members raised money individually as well as with the team. Several team fundraising events that anyone could participate in included:
1. “Chili / Chowdah” Cook off 2. Dress down days 3. Cow Chip Casino 4. Spaghetti supper/Dance /Raffles and 50/50
The chili chowdah cook off and dress down days took place here at the hospital and involved mostly hospital employees.
The Cow chip casino took place at the “Triple M” farm in Rumford Center. Karen Cole, RN, a nursing supervisor here at Rumford Hospital and her family own Adrienne (the cow).
Basically what happens is you create a board with 100 squares. We actually were able to sell two boards. You sell each square for $5.00. On the day of the event, you create a fenced in space and chalk out the grid, in this case, the squares were 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet. The cow is placed in the pen and you wait for the “CHIPS’ to fall. The person owning that square wins ½ the money. We raised $500 dollars and had a lot of fun. This year we hope to sell more boards, and make a day of it, selling burgers and corn on the cob.
Lastly, we held a public spaghetti supper (Homemade meatballs) and then a dance at the Eagles hall in Rumford. The Eagles club donated the Hall and the band played for a discounted price. We had several items donated by local businesses for the Chinese auction and also held a 50/50 throughout the night. Total money raised for this event was over $3,000.
This year we plan to also do this again and bring in two local bands to play.
